The Ultimate Guide: Updating Your Business Address

Quick Answer: You must notify Companies House within 14 days of changing your registered office. The fastest method is online via WebFiling (processed within 24 hours). You should also update HMRC for VAT and PAYE separately.

Part 1: Updating Companies House

You must notify Companies House within 14 days of changing your registered office address. Your address is not officially changed until it is registered on their system.

Most business owners let their accountant handle this. It ensures Form AD01 is filed correctly and stays in sync with your other statutory filings.

See the bottom of this guide for an email template you can send to your accountant.

Option B: Online via WebFiling (Fastest)

Online updates are usually processed within 24 hours.

Before you update Companies House, make sure your Hoxton Mix account is active and already set to the correct address in our system.

  1. Make sure your Hoxton Mix account is active and updated to the correct address
  2. Obtain your address confirmation certificate from the customer portal if you need to provide proof to other platforms
  3. Go to the Companies House WebFiling portal
  4. Enter your company number and 6-digit Company Authentication Code
  5. Choose “Change a registered office address”
  6. Enter the new address exactly as provided:

Company name: Your Company Name
Address: 66 Paul Street
Town/City: London
Postcode: EC2A 4NA

  1. Submit — you’ll receive a confirmation email once accepted

You should then update the same address with HMRC and any other platforms that hold your registered office or business correspondence details.

Option C: By Post (Form AD01)

  • Processing time: Usually 10 working days
  • Paper filings are more prone to rejection if errors are made
  • Address details must be complete (building number, street, post town, postcode)
  • Supporting evidence may be requested — use your address certification letter from the portal

⚠️ Important: You cannot use your annual Confirmation Statement (CS01) as the primary way to change your address. You must file an AD01 separately.

Part 2: Updating HMRC

While Companies House notifies HMRC for Corporation Tax, they do not always update other departments.

VAT — Notify HMRC within 30 days via your VAT online account (Government Gateway) under “Manage account”.

PAYE — Update through your HMRC online service or write to the National Insurance Contributions and Employers Office.

Corporation Tax — Usually updated automatically, but check your Business Tax Account 15 days after the Companies House update.

Part 3: The Everything Else Checklist

  • Business stationery (website, email signatures, invoices)
  • Banking and credit card providers
  • Insurance providers
  • Suppliers and clients
  • Online profiles (Google Business, LinkedIn, directories)
