The Ultimate Guide: Updating Your Business Address
This guide explains how to update your address with Companies House, HMRC, and other essential partners.
Part 1: Updating Companies House
You must notify Companies House within 14 days of changing your registered office address. Your address is not officially changed until it is registered on their system.
Option A: Via Your Accountant (Recommended)
Most business owners prefer to let their accountant handle this. It ensures the Form AD01 is filed correctly and stays in sync with your other statutory filings.
- See the bottom of this guide for an email template you can send to your accountant today.
Option B: Online via WebFiling (Fastest)
Online updates are usually processed within 24 hours.
- Sign in: Go to the Companies House WebFiling portal.
- Authenticate: Enter your company number and your 6-digit Company Authentication Code.
- Select Form: Choose "Change a registered office address".
- Enter New Details:
Address: 66–68 Paul Street
Town/City: London
Postcode: EC2A 4NA
- Submit: You will receive a confirmation email once accepted.
Option C: By Post (Form AD01)
If you cannot file online, you must download, print, and post Form AD01.
- Process Time: Usually 10 working days once received.
- Note: Paper filings are often more expensive and prone to rejection if errors are made.
Important Note on Confirmation Statements: You cannot use your annual Confirmation Statement (CS01) as the primary way to change your address. You must file an AD01 separately, though you can do both at the same time to ensure your records are accurate.
Part 2: Updating HMRC
While Companies House notifies HMRC of changes for Corporation Tax purposes, they do not always update other departments like VAT or PAYE. You should verify these manually to avoid missing critical tax notices.
VAT (Value Added Tax)
You must notify HMRC of an address change for VAT within 30 days or you may face a penalty.
- How: Sign in to your VAT online account (Government Gateway) and update your contact details under the "Manage account" section.
PAYE (Payroll)
If you are an employer, you must update your payroll records.
- How: Update your details through your HMRC online service or write to the National Insurance Contributions and Employers Office.
Corporation Tax
This is usually updated automatically via Companies House, but it is best practice to check your Business Tax Account 15 days after your Companies House update to ensure the change is reflected.
Part 3: The "Everything Else" Checklist
Beyond government bodies, remember to update the following to maintain your professional image and ensure you receive all correspondence:
- [ ] Business Stationery: Update your website footer, email signatures, and invoice templates.
- [ ] Banking: Notify your bank and any credit card providers.
- [ ] Insurance: Update your professional indemnity, public liability, or contents insurance providers.
- [ ] Suppliers & Clients: Inform your key partners to ensure physical deliveries and legal contracts use the correct address.
- [ ] Online Profiles: Update your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and any industry directories.
Part 4: Template: Email Your Accountant
Copy and paste this message to ask your accountant to handle the filing for you.
